About The Cassandro Project:
Traditionally in Mexico, luchadores were split into two main categories: rudos (“tough guys” or “bad guys”) and técnicos (the “good guys”). As early as the 1950s, straight male wrestlers wearing cliché drag appeared as characters called exóticos. They were almost always cast as rudos and played up their gay persona as a stage performance. It wasn't until the 1980s when openly homosexual wrestlers reclaimed the character of the exóticos. In a professional sport that is traditionally binary in nature, contemporary exóticos destabilize the nature of the lucha libre and encourage openness about gender and sexual diversity in a culture that has a history of machismo and homophobia. Cassandro is one of these exóticos who has reached international fame for his flamboyant costuming, style of performance, and open sexuality. At the AHA Festival of Progressive Arts, Cassandro will be joined by five other luchadores in a live match. We will also be screening Cassandro El Exotico, a short film about Cassandro's life.
